Magnetic Terrain System: A Deep Dive
The heart of Interactive Tabletop is the terrain itself. Every surface your heroes walk on, every wall they hide behind, and every tower they scale is built from a single primitive: the 40 mm voxel cube. At this scale each cube maps neatly to a one-inch grid square — the de facto standard for most tabletop RPGs — while remaining large enough to house the magnets and connectors that make the system work.
Each cube face contains a pair of 6x2 mm N52 neodymium disc magnets seated in precision-molded pockets. The polarity pattern follows a checkerboard convention so that any cube face can attach to any other cube face in the correct orientation. Pull force per face is approximately 1.2 kg — strong enough to hold a stack of five cubes vertically, yet easy to separate with a gentle twist.
For builders who want extra rigidity, we designed the octagonal pillar connector. This small insert press-fits into aligned sockets on two adjacent cubes, locking them together with a satisfying click. The octagonal profile prevents rotation, which is critical for multi-level structures where shear forces from leaning towers or cantilevered bridges would otherwise cause drift. Removing a pillar is as simple as pushing it out from the opposite side with a fingertip.
Multi-level stacking opens up dramatically richer encounter design. Imagine a dwarven mine with three distinct elevation layers connected by ramps and ladders, all assembled in under five minutes and stable enough to survive an enthusiastic dice roll across the table. During playtesting, our tallest stable structure reached twelve cubes high — well beyond anything a typical session demands.
The cubes themselves are injection-molded from ABS plastic with a stone-textured surface finish. We offer them in four base colors — dungeon grey, sandstone, ice blue, and volcanic black — and each cube accepts standard acrylic craft paint for anyone who wants to customize further. The first production run will ship with the Kickstarter Starter Kit, which includes 64 cubes, 24 pillar connectors, and a quick-start terrain guide.
